The Warning Signs

Victims of identity theft usually don't even realize they are victims until it's too late. Here are some warning signs that may signal your identity has been stolen:

  1. There are fraudulent charges on your credit card statement. (Always review your statements each month for this very purpose.)
  2. You have not received your credit card or bank statements in the mail. It is possible someone may have either stolen your statement or has had the addressed changed. Consider signing up to receive your statements via email instead.
  3. You receive unexpected credit cards or account statements.
  4. Bills arrive for goods and services you didn't request.
  5. You have noticed suspicious inquiries on your credit report. (For more about reviewing your annual credit report, click here.)
  6. You are receiving phone calls from creditors.
  7. You are suddenly denied credit.

If you experience any of these signs or suspect any fraudulent activity, take action immediately. For more information on how to defend yourself against identity theft and the steps you need to take to file a report, click here.
